BERLIN (Reuters) - A documentary about the lives of aging porn actors that throws a harrowing spotlight on the gay film industry in Los Angeles opened the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival Friday to an enthusiatic reception. One of many films at this year's Berlinale examining sex and pornography, "Cycles of Porn -- Sex/Life in L.A. Part 2" by German filmmaker Jochen Hick takes its audience on a riveting journey into the world of low-budget sex films. It tracks a group of young gay actors hoping for stardom in their industry who live together in an apartment filled with omniscient Internet web cameras and contrasts their wide-eyed ambitions with three men now retired from making porn films. It illuminates a world where drug abuse is prevalent and men die young. "The percentage of those doing drugs is huge," Hick said. "You feel sorry for the poor film actors, but then you think 'My god, you are old enough to decide what you're doing'." While Cole Tucker, a hard-bodied former porn star in his mid-40s, has found a new career in real estate, Kevin Kramer toils as a clerk renting videos rather than starring in them.

BERLIN – Public fascination with the real lives of porn performers continues to grow, with the latest example being a documentary that contrasts the lives of three aging and three up-and-coming gay adult stars. “Cycles of Porn – Sex/Life in L.A., Part 2” opened the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival this week to rave reviews. Half of the movie focuses on a trio of young, hopeful gay actors living together in an apartment filled with webcams as they search for stardom in the hardcore industry. Their experiences are inter-cut with footage of three men now retired from the business. Filmmaker Jochen Hick pulled no punches in making the documentary. Much of the film takes place on low-budget porn sets, giving his audience an unedited look at what happens during shoots, including those uncomfortable moments when actors are unable to perform. Hick also shows what goes on behind the scenes, such as when the young actors collect laughably small paychecks, which they promptly spend on drugs. “We found that gay actors do [porn] more for the adventure or to do something really wild, because it’s ridiculous how little they get paid,” said Hick. “By contrast, I think there are very, very few women doing porn for fun.” (...)
Im zweiten Teil betrachtet Hick die Fortentwicklung der Sexindustrie in vier verschiedenen Settings: Er trifft die Protagonisten des ersten Teils nach sieben Jahren wieder, besucht Chi Chi LaRue's "Live and Raw"-Internet WG, in der Jung-Pornostars wohnen, begleitet den Dreh eines Bareback-Pornos bei der größten Produktion der USA für solches Material und filmt auf einer privaten Sexparty. Zusammengeschnitten ergeben die einzelnen Episoden ein faszinierendes, wenn auch ernüchterndes Bild schwuler Ikonen und Ikonografie im neuen Jahrtausend sowie 100 Minuten witzige Gesellschaftskritik. Erkenntnis: Erregung wird inzwischen maschinell hergestellt und konsumiert. Gestorben, verschollen, ruiniert: Zwei Filme über die Produktionsbedingungen von Pornographie auf der Berlinale In der Mainstream-Öffentlichkeit scheint die Pornographie so gut wie abwesend zu sein. Das macht einen Großteil ihrer althergebrachten Faszination aus. Nicht anders auf einem Filmfestival: Sobald das Gerücht auftaucht, das Gezeigte sei in irgendeiner Form pornographischer Natur, ist der Saal voll. Während die private Rezeption der Pornographie eher einen flüchtigen und zerstreuten Charakter hat, scheint die öffentliche intensiv. Allgegenwärtig ist das Bewußtsein davon, daß weite Teile des kommerziell verwerteten Bildmaterials pornographisch sind. Pornographie ist die abwesende Allgegenwart. Ständige Bereitschaft In dieser Allgegenwart wird das Verhältnis zwischen dem Privaten und dem Öffentlichen jeweils neu verhandelt. Die Pornographie zeigt die Warenförmigkeit des Privaten, seine Austauschbarkeit im doppelten Sinne. Symptomatisch dafür ist die formale Ähnlichkeit zwischen »Reality-TV« und Pornographie. Jochen Hicks im Panorama gezeigter Dokumentarfilm »Cycles Of Porn – Sex/Life in L.A. Part 2« untersucht unter anderem auch ein deutliches Beispiel dafür: Eine Wohngemeinschaft im Stil der »Big Brother«-TV-Show, in der junge Schwule unter der ständigen Beobachtung der »webcams« stehen und in ständiger Bereitschaft zur sexuellen Dienstleistung gehalten werden. Reality-TV, Porno und Prostitution gehen Hand in Hand. Niemand der beteiligten »sex worker« macht sich große Illusionen über die Karrieremöglichkeiten im schwulen Pornogeschäft. Kaum läßt der Schauwert der sexuellen Dienstleistung ein bißchen nach, wird man gefeuert. Die öffentliche Porno-WG ist ein Musterbeispiel für »flexible«, sprich prekäre Arbeitsverhältnisse, die Spuren hinterlassen. Am Ende des Films gesteht einer der »sex worker«, den Aufenthalt in der WG nur mit dem täglichen Konsum von einem Liter Wodka durchgestanden zu haben. Hatte der erste Teil von Hicks Dokumentation 1998 noch vom Mythos der schwulen Subkultur und der daran angeschlossenen »Sexindustrie« gehandelt, präsentiert sich die Fortsetzung ernüchtert. Lof voor homopornodocumentaire Een documentaire over ouder wordende homoporno-acteurs krijgt veel lof op het filmfestival van Berlijn. "Cycles of Porn - Sex/Life in L.A. Part 2" gaat over lowbudget seksfilms. De Duitse regisseur Jochen Hick toont een groep acteurs die samen in een appartement leven en onder andere (weinig) geld verdien op homo websites. De docu is een sequel op "Cycles of Porn" uit 1997. "De acteurs doen het meer voor het avontuur", zegt Hick, "want ze worden ridicuul weinig betaald voor hun werk". Volgens hem zijn er weinig vrouwen die porno draaien voor de fun. Pornografie is een van de uitgekozen items op de Berlinale, en van de grotere filmfestivals. Vroeger kregen docu's als "Deep Throat" al aandacht in Berlijn. Hick kreeg €60.000 subsidie. Hij waarschuwt gevoelige kijkers voor enkele expliciete scènes. "Vooral vrouwen appreciëren de film. Het toont een wereld van drugsmisbruik, mannen die jong sterven maar ook ex-acteurs die het in de normale wereld ook hebben gemaakt."
Jochen Hick präsentierte seinem sechsten Film auf der Berlinale (zuletzt: "Ich kenn keinen: Allein unter Heteros", 2002). In "Cycles of Porn - Sex/ Life in L.A. - Part 2", zeigt er Pornodarsteller in Los Angeles, die er zum Teil bereits vor sieben Jahren, in Teil 1, mit der Kamera begleitet hat. Zur Premiere kamen zwei Protagonisten aus seinem Film: der zunächst höchst nervöse Kevin Kramer und der US-Schweizer Damian Ford, der erst kurz vor Ende des Films im Kino eintraf. Sein Flugzeug musste nämlich erst einmal wieder nach London zurückkehren, weil an Bord jemand gestorben war. Beide erwiesen sich als sehr freundliche und mitteilsame Gesprächspartner ("Ich habe dich noch nie so viel im bekleideten Zustand reden gehört", kommentierte Damian Kevins Redeschwall), auch später auf der Premieren-Party in einer Privatwohnung in Charlottenburg, auf der sich auch Georg Uecker, Christoph Eichhorn und Gloria Viagra ohne Drag tummelten. Dort erzählte Damian auf deutsch - er lebte von seinem sechsten bis achtzehnten Lebensjahr in der Schweiz -, dass er zum ersten Mal in Berlin ist und sich die Stadt ansehen will. CINEMA: IL PORNO AL CENTRO DEI DOCUMENTARI. Snobbato per anni dalla grande industria e distribuzione, dopo l'effetto Michael Moore il documentario sta vivendo una seconda giovinezza. E se i temi dell'impegno civile e sociale tendono a dominare, catalizzando le energie maggiori, anche il mondo della pornografia - sempre più sdoganata e al centro dell'interesse di artisti, fotografi e studiosi - viene ora tenuto in considerazione. Prima è stata la volta di Inside Deep Throat, il documentario sul film Gola Profonda presentato al Sundance e alla Berlinale, ora tocca a Cycles of Porn - Sex/Life in L.A. Part 2, in mostra nella sezione "Panorama" del Festival di Berlino. Diretto dal regista tedesco Jochen Hick, è un viaggio nel mondo del cinema hard a basso costo, incentrato sulla giornata tipo di un gruppo di attori gay che sperano di sfondare nel mondo del porno e vivono insieme in un appartamento stipato di webcam. Grund dafür bieten sicherlich die Aufführung von zwei mit dem Land verbundenen und von der Kulturellen Filmförderung unterstützten Produktionen im Berlinale-Programm: Der gerade mit dem Max Ophüls Preis ausgezeichnete Film "Am Tag, als Bobby Ewing starb" von dem gebürtigen Kieler Lars Jessen und der Dokumentarfilm Cycles of Porn-Sex/ Life in L.A. 2 von Jochen Hick.

(...) Ein Schwerpunkt der Panorama-Sektion lag auf der Präsentation von Werken, die sich mit dem Porno-Business auseinandersetzten. Der herausragende Dokumentarfilm Inside Deep Throat von Randy Barbato und Fenton Bailey untersuchte das Phänomen des Porno-Meilensteins Deep Throat, der die sexuelle Revolution in den 60er/70er Jahren prägte und einen wahren Kulturkampf in den USA auslöste. Aktuellen Pornoproduktionen ist jene politische Sprengkraft und künstlerische Ambition verloren gegangen. Cycles of Porn – Sex/Life in L.A. – Part 2 zeigt den Zynismus und die Kälte der gegenwärtigen Pornoindustrie, die technologische Errungenschaften wie das Internet oder VHS/DVD nutzen, um den Artikel Sex weltweit zu verkaufen.
Ein Programmschwerpunkt der Sektion Panorama ist traditionell das
schwul/lesbische Kino, und in diesem Jahr wurden hier gleich zwei
"norddeutsche" Filme gezeigt. Der Hamburger Jochen Hicks
hatte schon 1998 mit "Sex/Life in L.A." einen Dokumentarfilm
über schwule Pornodarsteller gedreht und untersucht nun mit
der Fortsetzung "Cycles of Porn", der unter anderem von
der Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Schleswig-Hostein gefördert
wurde, zum einen, was aus einigen seiner damaligen Protagonisten
geworden ist, und zum anderen, wie sich die schwule Pornoindustrie
durch das Internet geändert hat.
55. medjunarodne filmske festivalske igre “Berlinale“ O zaobidjenim ”teskim filmovima” (od kojih su srecom dva i nagradjena) O sexu i video trakama Njemackim dokumentarnim filmom Cycles of Porn - Sex/Life in L.A.
Part 2 o zivotu ostarjelih porno-zvijezda otvorena je Panorama,
u okviru koje je prikazano niz filmova o “najvaznijoj sporednoj
stvari na svijetu”, koja nije nogomet. Cycles of Porn je,
inace, nastavak filma Sex/Life in L.A. i u njemu se dotice pitanje
“gay sexa”. Pornografiji se ove godine u Berlinu posvetila
veca paznja nego ikada ranije. Mozda je razlog tomu sto porno industrija
donosi godisnje distributerima vise od 10 milijardi dolara, sto
se u Americi godisnje snimi vise od 10.000 porno filmova, a tek
500 ozbiljnih filmova. Veliko uzbudjenje je izazvao i dokumentarni
film Unutar dubokog grla, koji nije nista drugo do prica o euforiji
koju je izazvao cuveni pornic Duboko grlo.
2005-02-12 Berlin filmfestival 3,En film med obehagligt budskap Stjärnorna flockas i festivalens centrum, men jag söker dess periferi. Detta efter att ha konstaterat att Keanu Reeves verkligen är en medioker skådespelare när han misshandlar sin rollgestalt i en annars både välspelad och annorlunda amerikansk High-school-film, debuterande Mike Mills "Thumbsucker", och sett de brittiska storstjärnorna Natasha Richardson och Sir Ian McKeller brottats med trovärdigheten i engelsmannen David Mckenzies psykologdrama "Anstalten". En av fesivalens stora sidoserier heter Panorama. Här ser jag en film som aldrig kommer att visas utanför festivalernas trygga lilla frihetsyta. Den tyske regissören Jochen Hick har gjort dokumentären "Cycles of Porn". Efter fem år har han återvänt till några av de som producerar och som medverkar i porrfilmer i Los Angeles. Filmer gjorda av män, med män och för män. Det är en obehagligt påträngande film. Inte bara för alla dess många explicita sexscener som gör varje teve-visning omöjlig - här skulle man stundom tvingas pixla hela bilder och sekvenser för att ens närma sig någon slags större offentlighet. Det handlar om "fistfucking" och "barebacking". Det senare den trend inom gayporren där det är en upphetsande poäng att inte kondomer används. Antingen är alla redan HIV-posiiva. Eller blir de det. En förlorad generation dubbelt penetrerad och exploaterad. Hick rör sig hemtamt och hudnära alla dessa unga män -- många åldrade i förtid -- som visar upp sina kroppar och sin sexualitet för några få dollar. Här finns ett särskilt hotell med webkameror där några av dem får bo så länge det gynnar affärerna. Här finns porrveteranen som blandar regi och skådespelarinsatser, här finns några som försökt lämna hela verksamheten utan att ha lyckats och här finns minnena av redan döda vänner. Det är en skrämmande nedstigning i en subkultur där sexualiteten förefaller vara hel avpersonifierad och oavbrutet blandad med droger. Men det är också något annat i vad de så frispråkigt säger rakt in i Hicks kamera som minerar filmen. De talar om vad de får ut av att visa sig, om behovet av att synas. "Kicken av att veta att andra tittar på mig, gör mig upphetsad och lycklig", säger Cole Tucker. Han låter som en svensk dokusåpadeltagare. Här ligger filmens verkligt obehagliga budskap. Det som driver dessa män utmed destrukivitetens allé är blott en extrem variant av Big Brother, Klubb Goa och alla de andra dagliga utflykterna in i människors privata sfärer.
